Wellness with Christina Macpherson

What does wellness and self-care mean to you?
I think since becoming a mum I look at self-care & wellness in a much more intentional way. Both my husband Tom and I understand what we need to fill our self-care cup and we make sure to carve time for that each day. For me it can look like a run or some form of exercise, swimming at the beach, or just having 15-30 minutes alone. I value my solitude and I get all my best ideas when I play music, close my eyes and just ‘be’.

How do you incorporate moments of wellness throughout your day?

Wellness to me is all about feeling good inside and out. So my family and I make sure we start and end each day having a dance party, or a wrestle and a giggle. I also carry around a water bottle with me. The power of laughter, movement (and plenty of water) is pretty incredible.

What is your favourite self-care ritual?

Exercise would be my number one. I am instantly happier and have more energy afterwards. Number two would be being on a beach somewhere in the sun reading a good book.

What activity do you do to feel most like yourself?

Reading and writing. With writing, it’ll usually happen late at night - I’ll get an idea and I’ll creep out of my teeny place on the bed (one giant toddler and a normal size man occupy most of it) and sit and write. I feel almost euphoric when that happens and I find it something I enjoy more than anything else. I’m also a  big reader. Gimme a story to get lost in and that’s me in a nutshell.

Over the past 3 years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has had the most positive impact on your life?

I know it’s a little kitsch but it's such a goodie. Trying not to sweat the small stuff is really easy to say, harder to do, and amazing once you can really try to implement it.  I used to dwell for days on things that weren’t really a big deal, or that I had no control over. But focussing on how/what/why things can impact me if I dwell on them was a game changer. I can definitely still get upset up about something that isn’t that important, but I deal with it a lot better now. Also exercise. I know I’m preaching a bit but god, it’s been an absolute game changer in my mental health.

When life feels overwhelming or unsettling, what practices do you use to recenter and ground yourself?

There’s nothing more grounding than your kid coming out completely naked asking you to wipe their bum whilst simultaneously trying to eat a mango. It is completely grounding, hilarious and truly makes you grateful for everything. The world can be so sad and harrowing, but moments of hilarity and humbleness can make us so much more hopeful. And for me that’s all in my little boy.

What’s one piece of advice you’d tell your younger self?

I can’t do one, she was a hurricane, so here’s a few:

Invest more time with people who are invested in you.
Confront instead of shrink; say sorry instead of hide; forgive instead of trying to forget.
Lean into help when it’s offered.
What people say about you is none of your business, it’s their own stuff and you don’t need to hear it.
Spend (and drink) less alcohol.

Quick fire questions

Morning Beverage: Sunny is 2.5 and doesn’t sleep through so it’s a coffee (sorry), but I have been trying to have a herbal tea first up to help with hydration (as per your article on this!).
A guilty pleasure: Scotch fingers. Love a treaty (or 10) with my tea.
Current song on repeat: Ooh la la - the wise guys
Favourite Mayde Tea product: Love a Sticky Masala Chai, also the Cleanse Loose Leaf tea.
