Wellness with Liv Kaplan

What does wellness and self-care mean to you?
It’s a way of life! I don’t believe wellness is an aesthetic or a list of things to do and I believe it looks different for everyone. Wellness and self care to me is a basic human right that is to do things that make you feel happy, healthy and content most of the time.

How do you incorporate moments of wellness throughout your day?
It’s an all day every day kind of thing. I believe wellness is a way of life, not an aesthetic or particular list of things to do, it’s making small choices every day to feel healthy and happy. Of course there are the basics like eating whole foods, moving my body and being outside. But to me, wellness is also cleaning toilets so I can live in a clean and tidy home, it’s quality time with my partner without distractions, it’s app limits on my phone that help me use my time doing what matters to me instead of scrolling on social media. This is all daily wellness to me.

What is your favourite self-care ritual?
I’m very much a “less is more” kind of person, so any ritual for me has to be very flexible and simple to implement. My favourite thing is to have some kind of time in the morning outside looking up at the sky, sun and trees for at least five minutes, normally within the first 15 minutes of waking up. This can be as simple as sticking my head out my bedroom window, or having my morning glass of water (the first thing I consume), outside on our deck.

What activity do you do to feel most like yourself?
Without a doubt, it’s in the kitchen cooking and baking. I always feel so in the moment and I love having my hands busy and my mind in a flow state.

Over the past 3 years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has had the most positive impact on your life?
There are now times in my day or week when I just decide I don’t need to be doing or achieving anything at that moment. Even though my life and responsibilities are greater now than they were before, I never used to let myself do that, and instead had to always be productive or achieve something in some small way. I’m still productive and like to get a lot done, but it’s been so freeing to just have moments throughout the week where I don’t feel the need to achieve anything.

When life feels overwhelming or unsettling, what practices do you use to recenter and ground yourself?
I find breathwork so powerful for this! I don’t have a daily practice but when I have those moments where I feel scattered, lost or my heart is beating really fast, I turn on a five minute breathwork on the Open app and I’m always amazed by the instant shift.

What’s one piece of advice you’d tell your younger self?
Trust the timing of the universe.
