What Are Adaptogens?
You've probably seen the word on a label or heard it tossed around in a wellness conversation. But what do they actually do?

The Science Behind the Word
Adaptogens are a specific class of herbs that have been used in traditional medicine systems (including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) for thousands of years. To be classified as a true adaptogen, an herb needs to meet three criteria: it must be safe for long-term use, it must help the body resist a wide range of stressors, and it must work by normalising the body's response rather than pushing it in one direction.
That last point is what makes them genuinely interesting. Unlike stimulants (which ramp you up) or sedatives (which slow you down), adaptogens work both ways: helping an overactive stress response calm down, or supporting a depleted system to rebuild its resilience.
In clinical herbalism, this is called an amphoteric action: the herb brings balance rather than imposing a fixed effect.
What They're Doing in the Body
When we experience ongoing stress, our adrenal glands release cortisol as part of the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis): our body's central stress response system. In short bursts, this is normal. The problem is when it stays switched on.
Chronic stress depletes the adrenal glands, disrupts sleep, impairs immunity, and affects mood and focus. Adaptogens support the HPA axis to regulate more efficiently, helping your body return to balance more readily over time.
Common Adaptogens
Ashwagandha: Supports cortisol regulation, sleep quality, and nervous system resilience. Particularly useful during burnout or sustained stress.
Siberian Ginseng: A classic adrenal tonic that supports energy and mental stamina without the crash of caffeine.
Rhodiola: Improves mental clarity and reduces fatigue under pressure. Great during periods of high cognitive demand.
Holy Basil / Tulsi: A calming adaptogen that works on both the stress response and the nervous system. Deeply grounding.
How To Use Them Daily
Adaptogens work cumulatively. A single cup won't transform your stress response overnight, but a consistent daily ritual, over weeks and months, can make a real difference to how your body handles pressure.
That's why a warm cup of tea is one of the more practical ways to work them in. No complicated protocols. Just a moment of pause, and a blend that's quietly working with your body... not against it.
Our Adapt blend was formulated with exactly this in mind. A naturopath-crafted combination of adaptogens designed to be part of your everyday, not just your hard days.
